Fall Family Photos | Grace, Idaho
Have you ever carefully crafted a plan—set your heart on every detail—only for it to fall through moments before it was supposed to happen? How did you react? Chances are, your response might not have been quite as gracefully calm as Sam’s.
Sam was referred to me by another sweet family I had the privilege of photographing, and from the moment we connected, it felt like I had known her forever. One of the first things we bonded over was our shared love for the stunning Grace, Idaho landscape—specifically the hidden gem down by the power plant. That area has always been one of my favorite places to shoot family photos. From the soft tones of wild grasses to the vibrant river rocks and the ever-changing colors in nature, it offers a backdrop that’s hard to beat.
We had planned to meet at the footbridge near the river for their family portraits. But just as I was driving to the spot, I noticed something unusual: cars and trucks everywhere, loaded down with kayaks. It wasn’t until I pulled into the parking area that I realized the whole place was packed with people, kayaks, pop-up camps—you name it. I’d never seen it so busy!
I called Sam to let her know we needed a last-minute location change. Without missing a beat, she handled it like a total champ. Thankfully, I had a backup spot in mind nearby, and it ended up being absolutely perfect.
This alternative location offered a unique and beautiful Idaho backdrop: rocky terrain with soft grasses, sage green plants, and unexpected pops of color from native blooms. The contrast in textures and tones made for an incredible setting—and their outfits complemented the scenery flawlessly.
Sam’s family was patient, kind, and beyond generous. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better group to spend the evening with. I officially added six sweet humans and one adorable little dog to my “new friends” list—and I’m so grateful they made the trip down for their session!
Oh, and I have to share a funny moment… During the shoot, we asked the boys if they’d give their mama a kiss. But I think they misunderstood and thought we meant a kisser—like a punch! For a moment, it looked like we were about to witness a little sibling boxing match. Thankfully, we all had a good laugh, clarified the moment, and settled for a nice, gentle hug instead.
The lighting was dreamy, the temperature was just right, and—bonus—we weren’t bothered by snakes, spiders, mosquitoes, or any other not-so-fun critters. A total win for an outdoor session in rural Idaho!
Sam, I think the detour was absolutely worth it. Thank you for trusting me, showing up with joy and flexibility, and for becoming a friend I didn’t even realize I was missing. Your family is beautiful, your style was on point, and the whole experience was unforgettable.
And I can’t forget to mention that caramel apple and popcorn—so good! I’m already looking forward to your next session (better warn Joe 😉).
With love,
Mikenna
